Project Isizwe is a non-profit organisation that partners with Internet Service Providers to provide equitable internet access for impoverished African communities.
Enabled by blockchain technology, Project Isizwe provides transparent and traceable transactions, to ensure credibility between contributing donors and beneficiaries who are connected to fast, reliable and quality internet for free.

Our history
Founded in 2013, Project Isizwe was established as an non-profit organisation committed to enabling sustainable free internet access in low-income communities across South Africa. Project Isizwe’s pilot and award-winning flagship project – Tshwane Free WiFi – was designed to connect the unconnected in South Africa’s capital city. The project deployed 1050 free public WiFi hotspots across the City of Tshwane, with 600,000 monthly users receiving 500MB per day. If the project had been subscription funded, it would have cost under R10 per user per month with each user receiving 500MB a day. It remains the biggest Free Public WiFi network in Africa and was implemented in partnership with the local municipality, hailed as the most innovative government programme to bridge the digital divide.
Over the years, Project Isizwe has advocated for internet access as a human right to eradicate the gaps in education, health, employment and economic participation, enabling authentic equality between the citizens of Africa.

Tim Genders

Passionate about bringing the next billion Africans online, Tim is the Commercial Director of Project Isizwe. Every morning, Tim wakes up to connect the unconnected, a personal mission that has driven Tim’s success in managing one of the largest free WiFi projects in Africa. Tim graduated from Oxford University in 1989 with a 1st class honors degree in Engineering Science. In 1994, Tim moved to South Africa and developed a career in IT, co-founding BCX in 2000 and incorporating Airband, a wireless ISP in Durban, in 2006. Tim was the chair of WAPA (Wireless Access Providers Association) South Africa between 2016 and 2021 and is still an active member of the WAPA management committee.
Alan Knott-Craig

Passionate about Africa’s potential and bridging the digital divide in Africa by bringing equitable internet to poor communities, Alan is the Founder of Project Isizwe. Alan is a qualified Chartered Accountant and an entrepreneur who has co-founded, led and/or funded over 21 companies in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications sector in Africa, including Cellfind, iBurst, Mxit, iFind34600, Toodu, The Daily Maverick, Pondering Panda and Hero Telecoms. He has been nominated by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top eleven entrepreneurs changing the African landscape. Alan has published nine books and is the author of several viral articles, including Don’t Panic (2008), Reasons for Optimism (2019), Connected: A Brief History of Global Telecommunications (2020), and South Africa Might Get Lucky, arguing that the future of South Africa is bright, and that entrepreneurs will save the world.
Sibs Moodley-Moore

With a deep commitment to social justice and transformation, and a passion for the development of people, Sibs has been a Non-Executive Director of Project Isizwe since 2013. After receiving her PhD at the University of Washington, Seattle, Sibs pursued a career in academia, holding posts at Okanagan College in Canada, Trinity College in the USA and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. She served as Review Editor of Politikon: South African Journal of Politics, and was a Member of Council of the Africa Institute. Sibs is the on-site Director and Associate Professor of Global Studies for Trinity College Hartford, USA, at the University of Cape Town. She is currently also a Non-Executive Director of M&G Investment (formerly Prudential Investment Managers) and Dew Crisp. Sibs was Executive Director at Allan Gray responsible for recruitment, Employment Equity and Transformation, Corporate Social Investment and Mentorship.

Steve has 20 years’ experience in Telecoms, Banking, Digital Payments, Digital Products and Digital Operations, both in start-ups and established businesses. Steve co-founded two telecoms start-ups, both of which were acquired by listed ICT firms. Steve is the Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at SEACOM, responsible for Product, Sales and Marketing. Prior to SEACOM, Steve ran Vodacom’s Digital Sales and Self-Service platforms for Vodacom Business. Steve’s academic background includes Economics, an MBA and Theology, as well as various Post-Graduate programs from GIBS, Harvard and Global Leadership Program.

Our Company’s IT Infrastructure as well as storage of physical records meets all acceptable security standards required to be POPI compliant.

The supply of information is voluntary and by you supplying us with your information, you are consenting to, and accepting our privacy policy.
